March 3, 2009 – Panasonic added a much-requested feature to its Micro Four Thirds camera system with the announcement of the 12.1-megapixel LUMIX DMC-GH1, providing full 1080p video recording, where the original Lumix G1 provided no video recording at all. The GH1 also comes with a new kit lens, a 14-140mm zoom (28-280mm equivalent) with f/4.0-5.8 aperture and optical image stabilization, designed with low-noise characteristics to allow optical zoom during movie recording.

The imminent arrival of the DMC-GH1 (if not its final name; many were expecting a ‘G1-HD’) has been widely expected in the run-up to PMA 2009. Now that the camera has finally shown up it does, as expected, resemble little more than a DMC-G1 with various extra bits and pieces added on, all in support of its hotly-anticipated HD video functionality. But unlike recent DSLRs which have offered video capability, the GH1 is capable of continuous autofocus in movie mode using its purpose-designed contrast-detect AF system, and Panasonic has supported this with the all-new, specially optimized Lumix G Vario HD 14-140mm F4.0-5.8 lens; this should make it a far more usable option for users looking for a fully functional stills/video hybrid.

Fully compliant with the Micro Four Thirds System standard, the LUMIX G Micro System combines a downsized body with advanced functions that achieve both easy operation and high quality.

When I reviewed Panasonic’s groundbreaking Lumix DMC-G1 hybrid camera, my biggest criticism about its features was its lack of movie capture; since Panasonic had announced it would ship a model this year which included the capability, it felt a bit premature to recommend that version. Well, next year is here, and so is the movie-capable version of that interchangeable-lens non-SLR camera, the Lumix DMC-GH1.
